고갱의 타히티 작품 중 이처럼 시정에 넘치는 목가적인 작품은 일찌기 없었을 것이다.

평평하게 칠해진 색면(色面) 하나하나가 깊숙한 환상의 세계를 이루고 있는 색다른 작품이다.

짙은 프루샨 블루의 웅덩이, 거기에서 물을 마시는 하얀 말도, 또한 푸르게 칠해진 넘실넘실 뻗어나는 나무의 가지도,

늪가에 피어있는 하얀 꽃, 새빨간 말 잔등에 올라앉아 사라져 가는 섬의 여인도, 이상한 침묵 속에 잠겨 있다.  

화면의 색을 대립적으로 배치하지는 않았지만, 빨강에서 노랑, 연두, 초록, 파랑, 보라로 해조의 변화를 주어 결코 단조로운 배색은 아니지만, 전체가 통 일된 조용한 목가적(牧歌的)인 분위기를 자아낸다. 이 작품은 그가 자살을 시도했던 다음의 작품으로, 늪의 수면이나나무의 검푸른 가지는 어둡고 침잠된 죽음의 그림자가 스며있는 듯하다.

세 명의 타히티인은 V자 형태의 안정된 구도 속에, 고대 문명의 장식화에 등장하는
인물들처럼 인위적인 포즈를 취하고 있다. 고갱의 장식주의의 일면을 엿볼 수 있는
작품으로, 배경도 장식적인 기능을 살려 평면 처리했다. 이와 같은 배경 처리는
당시 고갱이 즐겨 쓰던 기법이다.

이 작품은 고갱의 타히티 작품 중 가장 자연스러운 것 중의 하나이다. 대부분의 작품이 의식적인 그의
원시주의적(原始主義的) 조형 의지를 담고 있다면, 이 작품은 그런 의식을 떠나서 간결한 구도로
인공적(人工的)인 단순화(單純化)나 양식화(樣式化)의 흔적도 없이, 두 여인의 포즈에도 고갱이 가끔
쓰는 자바나 이집트의 그 양식도 볼 수가 없다. 젊고, 그래서 아름다운 매력을 몸 속에 가득히 지니고
자연스럽게 서 있다. 그것은 유럽인이 꿈꾸어 오던 이브(Eve)도 아니고, 그렇다고 그 반대적 이브도 아니다.
그런 대립을 뛰어넘은, 싱싱한 한 현실로서의 여체(女體)인 것이다. 빨간 꽃과 젖꼭지, 입술 등의 색에서,
오렌지빛, 노랑, 그리고 청록의 밝은 치마에서 차츰 어두운 암록색 검정의 머리칼과 치마색까지 차분한
하모니를 이루고 화면은 풍부하고 투명한 아름다움으로 가득 찼다.

이 작품은 고갱이 타히티에 건너가기 이전의 최고 걸작으로 지목되고 있는 것이다. 여기에 그려진 그리스도 상은 퐁 다벵에 가까운 트레마로의 교회당에 있었던 것이다. 원경에 보이는 것은 퐁 다벵 마을과 생트마르그리트의 언덕일 것이다.

세 사람의 부르타뉴 여인도, 십자가도, 붉은 색 나무들도, 모두 하나의 상징적 풍경의 요소로 화하고 있다.

 

야성이 가득하고 자만에 부푼 그가 이 작품에 임하면서 경건한 마음으로, 견고하게 화면을 구축한 느낌이다.

그러나, 그의 마음속에 비친 어떤 화재 (畵材)도 그가 나타내려는 의도대로 변형되고 추상화 (抽象化)되어 버린다.

옥타브 미르보는 여기에 그려진 그리스도에 대하여 '이 그리스도의 우울은 말로 표현할 수가 없다.

그 얼굴에는 무서운 슬픔이 있다.' 라고 말하고 있다. 이 무렵의 그의 심정이 바로 그랬으리라고 짐작된다

[꽃을 가진 여인(Vahine No Te Tiare,Woman with a Flower )]

고갱이 타히티에 도착하여 얼마간 지난 후에 그린 작품으로, 간혹 그의 오두막집에 찾아오곤 하던 이웃 여인을 모델로 하고 있다. '그녀는 예쁘다고는 말할 수 없지만 이는 구라파적 기준에서 보았을 때 그럴 뿐이다. 어쨌든 역시 아름다운 것이다. 그 얼굴 생김새의 어디를 보나 곡선의 매듭 속에 라파엘로적인 조화가 있다. 조각가가 살을 붙인 것 같은 입은 온갖 말을 하고, 즐거움과 괴로움과의 입맞춤을 말하고 있었다. 그 울적한 표정 속에는 괴로움과 즐거움이 뒤엉켜 의연함 속에 순종(順從)함이 있었다. 미지(未知)한 것에의 두려움이 적당하게 나타나고 있었다. 나는 서둘러서 정열을 기울여 일을 했다. 그 초상은 내 마음의 눈이 인정한 것을 그리려고 했다. 무엇보다도 먼저 내면을 그리려고 한 것이라고 나는 생각하고 있다.' 일체의 인공적인 티가 없는 타히티의 생활에는 그 일상의 한 장면 장면이 상징적인 의미성(意味性)을 가지고 있다. 1892년 7월에 고갱은 부인 메트에게 '나는 많은 일을 하고 있소. 지금에 와서야 이 토지와 그 향기를 알게 되었소, 나는 타히티 사람들은 어디까지나 수수께끼의 모습으로 그리고 있긴 하지만, 이것이야말로 마오리족 (族), 바로 그것이오. 이런 것을 알기 위하여 나는 일 년이 걸려 버렸소.'라고 쓰고 있다. 그러한 그의 이해가 이 그림 속에 확실히 나타나고 있다. 두여인의 동 (動)과 정(靜)의 자세의 대조(對照)에 하반신(下半身)이 겹쳐 있는 그 미묘한 뉘앙스가 인상적이다.
